This question has been floating around recently. Of course, imaging like radiographs and MRI’s have their place in the medical field, but in which situations? They’re useful in what we call “red flag” times--when there seems to be a serious pathology that needs diagnosing or uncovered. When “red flag” items are discerned, then what is their place?
There has been an increasing overuse of imaging performed on musculoskeletal issues. Some con’s to having imaging done include: exposure to radiation, high costs, and the nocebo effect. Nocebo, opposite of placebo, can be defined as a negative effect on health by a negative mindset or in this case, a scary diagnosis that come from imaging.
One question I’d like to pose to you is this, “Will the images change the way I picture my healing process, or the way I’m going to be treated?” Physical therapists can accurately diagnose your condition and address specific symptoms to relieve your pain and restore function without unnecessary imaging.
In the case of low back pain, patients who saw their physical or orthopedist first, then underwent early MRI had higher health care utilization and cost compared to those who received physical therapy first.
