You may know someone that is suffering from urinary incontinence, urinary urgency, or having difficulty controlling their urine. It’s more common than we think it is. 5%-72% of adult women and 11%-22% of men are having troubles. You might now even know someone that is suffering from it. There are medications and treatments that can help. Physical Therapy is one option. One reason for the above indications may be from weakened pelvic floor muscles and that is something that can be strengthened.
In some current research, alongside other treatments and information, I came across Bladder Inhibition “trick”, and wanted to incorporate it into my treatment to see if there was any truth to it. I had been seeing a current patient that I was seeing for something unrelated to bladder problems, but she would always complain of sudden onsetting of urination and/or leakage during our sessions.
The “trick” is to perform 10 +/- heel raises in sitting prior to an anticipated urge or during an episode of inappropriate urgency. This particular patient complained of the leakage happening most when she would stand up. I had her perform x10 heel raises inconspicuously without explaining exactly what we were doing. She had complained less of leakage since doing that each time with her. I then explained that she could start doing that whenever she felt that urge/leakage/or before she anticipated it coming, which was most in her case.
Definitely talk to your healthcare provider regarding these problems, physical therapy at Wolken Therapy & Wellness can help, but until then try this “trick” in the meantime!
